Only Gough could bring them together! Australia's last SEVEN prime ministers pose for a rare photo at Whitlam memorial (but Abbott and Howard were loudly booed by the Labor crowd)

Actress Cate Blanchett has joined Gough Whitlam's son, Antony, and the nation's leaders in paying tribute to the legendary former prime minister at a packed memorial service in Sydney this morning.

A crowd of family, friends, members of the public and Australia's seven surviving prime ministers were moved to tears, and to laughter, as the speakers celebrated Whitlam's ever-jovial personality and transformative reforms.

Ms Blanchett, a special guest speaker, said that despite being an infant when Whitlam became prime minister, she was struck by a 'great sorrow' over his death.

'I was but three when he passed by, but I shall be grateful until the day I die,' the Academy Award winner said, paying tribute to Whitlam's women's rights reforms, introduction of free healthcare and arts policies.
